Do it yourself!: Floor Borders, Hardwood Inlays, Solid Wood Inlays,
Same Plank Inlays
Our zig-zag pattern is made from planks which have the same
dimensions. Our zig-zag pattern is exactly four (4) boards wide.
This pattern could be made from exactly the same plank, which means you
don't have to use more than one color. However, the pattern is nicely
enhanced when two more shades are added; one darker and one lighter
than the color of edge of the design. Just a little hint: it looks good
if one of the colors in the zig-zag pattern is the same as color of the
main surface.
Q:What is tricky about making zig-zag pattern?
A: Tricky part is to start and end the pattern where one wants it to be ended and started.
The trick is to find the shape of the component board that assures
that zig-zag starts and ends at its full cycle exactly at a distance
you want it to end.
For example, for some reason, you decide that the border that goes around the room needs to span across 50 board widths.
Later you decide that you prefer the border to span across 51
board widths. Does it imply that zig-zag pattern will end now elsewhere
than at full cycle?
Yes, in general, it does mean that.
You can recalculate again the shape of boards forming zig-zag to end the pattern at 51 boards even.
It is always possible to find such a shape of component boards
that zig-zag starts and ends at full cycle and spans exactly the number
of boards you wish.
In general there is a lot of solutions for every desired border span that meet a full-pattern-cycle requirement. See more sample drawings under this link).
